(8) Oil or water should not be put on the front seat outer belt and the front seat outer belt should be
cleaned with the appropriate detergents.
(i) AIRBAG SENSOR ASSEMBLY
(1) Never reuse the airbag sensor assembly involved in a collision where the SRS has deployed.
(2) The connectors to the airbag sensor assembly should be connected or disconnected with the
sensor mounted on the floor. If the connectors are connected or disconnected while the airbag
sensor assembly is not mounted to the floor, it could cause an undesired ignition of the supple-
mental restraint system.
(3) Work must be started after 90 seconds from the time the ignition switch is turned to the ºLOCKº
position and the negative (±) terminal cable is disconnected from the battery, even if only loosen-
ing the set bolts of the airbag sensor assembly.
(j) WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR
(1) The SRS wire harness is integrated with the instrument panel wire harness assembly. All connec-
tors in the system are a standard yellow color. If the SRS wire harness becomes disconnected
or the connector becomes broken due to an accident, etc., repair or replace it.
3. ELECTRONIC CONTROL
(a) REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF BATTERY TERMI-
NAL
(1) Before performing electronic work, disconnect the
battery negative (±) terminal cable beforehand in
order to prevent it from shorting and burning out.
(2) When disconnecting and installing the terminal
cable, turn the ignition switch and lighting switch
OFF, and loosen the terminal nut completely. Per-
form these operations without twisting or prying the
terminal.
(3) When the battery terminal cable is removed, the
memories of the clock, radio, DTCs, etc. are erased.
So before removing it, check them and make a note
of their settings.
(4) When the battery negative (±) terminal cable is dis-
connected, memories of various systems are
erased. Therefore, refer to the PRE±CHECK for
each system to make sure whether or not the sys-
tem needs to be initialized after the battery negative

(b) Install the timing belt in the following order:
1. Camshaft timing pulley
2. Supply pump drive pulley
3. Water pump pulley
4. Crankshaft timing pulley
5. No. 2 idler pulley
6. Oil pump pulley
7. No. 1 idler pulley
(c) Install the timing belt tensioner.
(1) Using a press, slowly press in the push rod with
pressure 981 to 9,807 N (100 to 1,000 kgf, 200 to
2,205 lbf).
(2) Align the holes of the push rod and the housing, in-
sert hexagon wrench (1.27 mm) through the holes
to keep the setting position of the push rod.
(3) Release the press.
(4) Temporarily install the tensioner with bolt (A).
(5) Turn the tensioner clockwise and temporarily install
the other bolt.
(6) Alternately tighten the 2 bolts.
Torque: 21 N´m (214 kgf´cm, 15 ft´lbf)
(7) Remove the hexagon wrench from the tensioner.
23. CHECK VALVE TIMING
(a) Slowly turn the crankshaft 2 complete revolutions (720)
from TDC to TDC.
NOTICE:
Always turn the crankshaft clockwise.

39. INSPECT CAMSHAFT
(a) Inspect camshaft for runout.
(1) Place the camshaft on V±blocks.
(2) Using a dial indicator, measure the circle runout at
the center journal.
Maximum circle runout: 0.03 mm (0.0012 in.)
(b) Inspect cam lobes.
(1) Using a micrometer, measure the cam lobe height.
Standard cam lobe height:
Intake 44.333 ± 44.433 mm (1.7454 ± 1.7493 in.)
Exhaust 43.761 ± 43.861 mm (1.7229 ± 1.7268 in.)
Minimum cam lobe height:
Intake 44.18 mm (1.7394 in.)
Exhaust 43.61 mm (1.7169 in.)
(c) Inspect camshaft journals.
(1) Using a micrometer, measure the journal diameter.
No. 1 journal diameter:
34.449 ± 34.465 mm (1.3563 ± 1.3569 in.)
Others journal diameter:
22.949 ± 22.965 mm (0.9035 ± 0.9041 in.)
If the journal diameter is not as specified, check the oil clear-
ance.
40. INSTALL CYLINDER BLOCK WATER DRAIN COCK SUB±ASSY
(a) Apply two or three threads of adhesive to the drain union, and install it within 3 minutes.
Torque: 20 Nm (204 kgfcm15 ftlbf)
(b) After applying the specified torque, rotate the drain union clockwise until its drain port faces downward.
NOTICE:
Do not put into coolant in an hour after the installation.
Do not rotate the drain union more than 360 in (b), and never loosen it after setting the union
correctly.
41. INSTALL OIL STRAINER SUB±ASSY
(a) Install a new gasket and the oil strainer with the 2 nuts and a bolt.
Torque: 9.0 Nm (92 kgfcm, 80 in.lbf)

7. No. 1 idler pulley
(c) Check that the timing marks are aligned as shown in the
illustration.
(d) Install the timing belt tensioner.
(1) Using a press, slowly press in the push rod with
pressure of 981 to 9,807 N (100 to 1,000 kgf, 200
to 2,205 lbf).
(2) Align the holes of the push rod and housing, then
insert hexagon wrench (1.27 mm) through the holes
to keep the setting position of the push rod.
